#22 Nicholas Pontius House

Approximate size 16"x10"x16"

This Log home is our 1st home that we have taken back to its original homesteader.  Located in the Northwestern part of Berks, County, PA, north of Interstate Rt. 78.  The homesteaders got their land from Richard Penn in the mid 1700’s, which was part of the Manor of Andukhea, it was partitioned in the 1770’s

The home was typical for this area.  The style and characteristics of the home tells us all about the time period.   The log home was built as a two story.  It has NO doors on the sides and back of the structure just 4 small windows per side.  All doors are facing the Barn, stream out door cookery and outbuildings.  There’s a walk-in basement door on the right side of the 2-story house.  The indoor cookery was located there.  With a closet type wall there was a hidden tight staircase leading to the upstairs kitchen.  This entrance is right next to the only supply of water the stream.

The unusual two doors next to each other had a very important reason.  The family strictly used the right door this lead into the kitchen.  The left door was the keeping room only used for company and funerals.  Also with the doors on the barn side of the house tells us of the trouble in the area in the mid 1700’s.   With Indian scalping and the start of the French and Indian war.

6th generation family members commissioned this home.
