#24 Jacob Rust Log HouseHomsteaded in 1730's
Jacob RustPa. German HomsteaderLocated in Strausstown, Berks Co., PA Lot #71 Settled Approx. 1835 Through the Ports of Philadelphia War. 4/3/1751 The construction of this homestead has two doors on either side of the house and two windows, one in the front above the cold cellar and the second window located on the south side. The interesting thing about this structure is that the fireplace system is located to the back of the cabin. This tells me that the down stairs was one whole room. They needed the windows for lookout protection, since the location overlooks a valley and other settler homesteads. The cabin is a story and a half, and has a sleeping room on the second floor. The Cold Cellar was placed in the front of the Log Home, overlooking the valley. NOTE: The standards for claiming your property was through a Gentleman's Handshake. You were not required to register your property. 1790-1810 the State resurveyed all properties and Deeds were given. This log home was used as a residence until around 1800 when the two story farmhouse was constructed. Later in the 1900's the fireplace system was removed and an addition was added to the back of log house for a garage. The garage was taken down for an addition to the house and the owners plan to re-erect the log home on their property. It amazes me that what we really know about the homes we live and all other buildings on our properties. They have such a deep history of who we are and what hardship our forefathers had to deal with. We have this history standing at our doorsteps and it must be preserved for future generation. | |||||||||||
