#24 – Jacob Rust Log House

Homesteaded in 1730’s

Approximate size 11"x 9"x 12"

The Jacob Rust Log House was built in the early 1730’s.  Located just off of Rt.183, south of Strausstown, Berks Co. PA. The construction of this homestead has two doors on either side of the house and two windows one in the front above the cold cellar and the second window located on the south side. The interesting thing about this structure is that the fireplace system is located to the back of the cabin.  This tells me that the down stairs was one whole room.  Plus needing the windows for lookout protection, since the location over looks a valley and other settler homesteads.  The cabin is a story and a half, which has a sleeping room on the second floor.

This log home was used as a residence until around 1800 when the two story farmhouse was constructed.  Later in the 1900’s the fireplace system was removed and an addition was added to the back of log house for a garage.  The garage was taken down for an addition to the house and the owners plan to re-erect the log home on their property.

It amazes me that what we really know about the homes we live and all other buildings on our properties.  They have such a deep history of who we are and what hardship our forefathers had to deal with.  We have this history standing at our doorsteps and it must be preserved for future generation.
